Honestly, when I went to college to become a writer, I didn’t even know copywriting existed. I wanted to be a screenwriter and a novelist.
So when I graduated college with a degree in philosophy, a degree in creative writing, and 30k in debt, I immediately got the job I was most qualified for - bartender.
Now, I was at bigger risk than ever of becoming a cliche (alcoholic, struggling writer). But as luck would have it...
The restaurant I worked at was just 3 blocks from the main headquarters of Agora Publishing, the billion dollar direct response marketing juggernaut.
Long story short, that proximity led to an amazing thing happening — I got noticed.
Noticed by people I later found out were some of the best copywriters in the world.
I wasn't a great writer, but they recognized my potential.
